A practical guide to integrating rooflights into VMZINC standing seam roofs, covering kerb geometry, back gutters, drainage, seam layout, movement and maintainable weathering details.

Rooflights interrupt the natural drainage plane of a standing seam roof, so their position and kerb arrangement should be resolved before panel widths and seam centres are fixed. The layout needs to direct water around the opening without forcing narrow trays, awkward seam terminations or unnecessary cross-joints.

A properly formed upstand separates the rooflight frame from the zinc weathering and gives the metal room to be dressed and joined cleanly. The uphill side normally needs a back gutter sized and shaped for the roof area draining towards it, while side gutters and the downslope apron must discharge freely onto the roof surface without creating debris traps.

Thermal movement remains important at every rooflight junction. Clips, trays and folded flashings should allow the zinc to expand and contract without loading the frame, distorting seams or concentrating stress at corners. Rooflight corners, seam endings and any required transverse joints need project-specific detailing rather than relying on sealant as the primary weathering measure.

The insulation, air-control layer and internal lining should remain continuous around the kerb to reduce condensation risk and local cold bridging. External membranes, separation layers, fixings and adjoining components must be compatible with the specified VMZINC build-up and coordinated with the rooflight manufacturer’s requirements.

Good access for inspection is also worth considering at design stage. Clear drainage routes, visible gutters and details that can be cleaned without damaging seams make routine maintenance more straightforward. Final dimensions and junctions should follow the project designer’s drainage and condensation assessments together with current VMZINC and rooflight manufacturer guidance.
