Cobham is about twelve miles from our base in Old Windsor, an easy run down the M25. The Specialist Roofing Company is a family-run metal roofing firm, fitting zinc and copper since 2007. We’re approved installers for VMZINC, RHEINZINK and PREFA, and in Cobham, Oxshott, Stoke d’Abernon and Fairmile much of our work is on large detached houses, new builds and the buildings in their grounds.

Metal roofs on Cobham’s larger homes

Cobham and Oxshott are known for large houses on generous, wooded plots, many on private roads and estates. Plenty have been extended or rebuilt in the last twenty years. For an architect, zinc and copper are natural choices there:

  • Feature roofs: curved or faceted standing seam over an entrance, a stair tower or a garden pavilion. Zinc and copper can both be formed to curves.
  • Copper: it goes on bright, darkens to a deep brown and can eventually turn green. Clients who want a roof that changes with the house often choose it. See copper roofing.
  • Outbuildings: pool houses, garages with rooms above, home offices and garden studios. Their low roofs suit standing seam much better than tiles.
  • Zinc cladding: on upper storeys and dormer cheeks, to break up a large elevation.

Oak frames, trees and run-off

Green oak frames and cedar cladding are common on Cobham houses and outbuildings, and the plots are full of mature trees. Both matter for metal roofs. Acidic run-off from some timbers can attack zinc over time, and leaf litter blocks gutters and valleys. So we look at what sits above and beside the metal before we choose details. We separate it from timber where needed, use suitable fixings, and keep drainage simple and accessible. Our article on avoiding contact corrosion explains the same principle for aluminium.

Cobham’s conservation areas

Elmbridge Borough Council has five conservation areas in and around Cobham: Cobham itself (the old village and Church Street area by the River Mole), Plough Corner, The Tilt, Downside Village and Stoke d’Abernon. Painshill, the 18th-century landscape garden on the edge of town, adds to the protected setting. If your property is in a conservation area or listed, changes to the roof are likely to need consent. Zinc and copper are traditional roofing metals and often acceptable with good drawings. We’ll provide samples and product data.

Big roofs need careful setting-out

On a large new house, the metal roof is one of the most visible parts of the design, so seam lines have to align with windows, rooflights and the edges of the building. We set out every roof before ordering material and allow for thermal movement on long trays. Read why standing seam roofs need movement allowance.

Cobham zinc and copper roofing FAQs

Zinc or copper: which is better?

Both last a very long time. Zinc stays grey; copper changes colour over the years. Copper usually costs more. We’ll bring samples of both so you can see them against your brick, render or timber.

Do you work alongside main contractors?

Yes. We can take on the metal roofing and cladding as a specialist package alongside your main contractor.
