Staines-upon-Thames is about four miles from our base in Old Windsor, along the river. The Specialist Roofing Company is a family-run metal roofing firm, fitting zinc since 2007. We’re approved installers for VMZINC, RHEINZINK and PREFA, and we fit standing seam zinc roofs, zinc dormers and cladding on homes across Staines, Laleham, Ashford, Stanwell and Shepperton.

A river town’s roofs
Most homes in Staines are within a short walk of the Thames or one of its backwaters. The town has Victorian and Edwardian terraces around the centre, a lot of inter-war and post-war semis, and a stretch of riverside houses, chalets and bungalows towards Laleham and Penton Hook. Each brings its own kind of zinc job:
- Riverside homes and garden rooms. Owners often want a roof that’s light, long-lasting and doesn’t mind damp air. Standing seam zinc or PREFA aluminium is a good fit, provided the build-up underneath is ventilated properly.
- Semis and terraces. A low-pitch zinc roof on a single-storey rear extension, or a zinc-clad loft dormer.
- Bungalows. Adding a first floor or a large dormer to a bungalow is common here. Zinc keeps the extra weight down and gives the new upper storey a clean, modern line.
Damp air, flood risk and ventilation
Large parts of Staines and Laleham lie in the Thames flood plain, and the river brings mist and high humidity much of the year. Zinc lasts a very long time if it can breathe, and fails early if moisture is trapped underneath. So we design every Staines roof with the correct ventilated or warm-roof build-up and the right underlay for the system. Read why ventilation matters beneath VMZINC standing seam roofing.
Where a building has been raised or rebuilt for flood resilience, a lightweight metal roof also helps keep loads on the new structure down. Your architect or structural engineer will set the design, and we’ll detail the metal to suit.
Is a metal roof noisy under the flight path?
Staines sits close to Heathrow, and customers sometimes ask whether a metal roof will be noisy, either from aircraft or from rain. In practice, the noise depends far more on the build-up than on the metal. A zinc roof laid on a solid deck over insulation, as standing seam always is, is a very different thing from a thin sheet on bare rafters. We’ll talk you through the build-up at survey and explain what each layer does.
Conservation areas in Spelthorne
Spelthorne Borough Council has eight conservation areas, including one covering the historic core of Staines, and nearly 200 listed buildings across the borough. If your home is in a conservation area or listed, changes to the roof are likely to need consent. Zinc and copper are traditional roofing metals, so with good drawings they’re often acceptable. We can supply samples and product information for your application.

Staines zinc roofing FAQs
Does zinc corrode near the river?
Not if it’s installed properly. Zinc forms its own protective patina in normal air. The risk is moisture trapped underneath, which is why ventilation and the right underlay matter so much on riverside jobs.
Can you put a zinc roof on a garden room by the river?
Yes. It’s one of the most common jobs we do, and the light weight suits timber-framed buildings.
