Victorian villas, 20th-century estates and the heath
Camberley is young for a Surrey town. It grew up in the 19th century beside the Royal Military College at Sandhurst and the Staff College. Its oldest streets, around Upper Gordon Road and Church Hill, still have large Victorian villas. Most of the town, though, is 20th-century: big estates of family homes and chalet bungalows built from the 1960s onwards in Heatherside, Old Dean and Frimley, with heath and pine woods all around.
That gives us three kinds of Camberley job:
- Dormers on bungalows and chalet houses. Adding a zinc-clad dormer or a full-width rear dormer is a neat way to turn a cramped first floor into proper bedrooms. Zinc keeps the weight down on existing roof timbers. See zinc dormers.
- Extensions to 1960s–90s houses. A standing seam zinc or PREFA aluminium roof brings a dated house up to date, and lasts far longer than felt on a flat-roofed extension.
- Period villas. Copper or zinc bay roofs, porches and sympathetic rear extensions.
Conservation areas in Surrey Heath
Surrey Heath Borough Council has nine conservation areas. In Camberley these are Upper Gordon Road to Church Hill and the former Staff College on London Road, and the Basingstoke Canal conservation area runs through the borough too. Others cover Bagshot, Chobham and Windlesham. Inside a conservation area, permitted development rights are more limited, so check with the council or your architect before designing a dormer or extension. We can supply zinc samples and product data for any application.
Pines, sandy soil and drainage
The heathland around Camberley and Lightwater grows pine and birch, and their needles and seeds end up in gutters and valleys. On these roofs we keep drainage simple: generous falls, accessible outlets and as few traps for debris as possible. Many 20th-century houses also have shallow-pitched or flat-roofed sections. Standing seam can be laid at much lower pitches than tiles, provided the build-up is right. Read why ventilation matters beneath standing seam.
Zinc or aluminium?
For a lot of Camberley re-roofs, the real choice is between zinc and PREFA aluminium. Both are light and low-maintenance. Zinc has a natural, mineral grey finish. PREFA comes in factory colours, which helps when you’re matching new anthracite windows. We’re approved for both, so we’ll give you a straight comparison. See PREFA aluminium roofing.

Camberley zinc roofing FAQs
Can you replace a felt flat roof with zinc?
Often, yes. It depends on the pitch and the structure underneath. Standing seam needs a minimum fall, so we’ll check at survey.
Will a zinc dormer suit a chalet bungalow?
Usually very well. The slim cheeks and edges of a zinc dormer look lighter on the roof than a tile-hung box.
