A railway town with heathland at the edges

Modern Woking grew up around the station after the railway arrived in 1838. Today that means Victorian and Edwardian houses close to the centre, large Edwardian and inter-war houses on wooded roads in Hook Heath, Mount Hermon and Pyrford, and plenty of post-war family homes in between. Around the edges are heaths and commons, such as Horsell Common, and the Basingstoke Canal runs right through the borough.

The zinc work that follows from that housing:

  • Loft conversions. A zinc-clad dormer gives a Victorian or 1930s house a slim, neat addition with more internal headroom than a tile-hung one. See zinc dormers.
  • Extensions on big plots. Single-storey kitchen and garden-room extensions with low-pitch standing seam roofs, often with large rooflights.
  • New and replacement houses in the leafier roads, where architects use zinc for the roof, cladding and box gutters.

Pine needles and gutters

The heathland soils around Woking grow a lot of Scots pine and birch. Pine needles are small and persistent: they collect in valleys, behind rooflight upstands and in box gutters. On Woking roofs we pay particular attention to drainage. That means generous falls, outlets that are easy to reach, and no fiddly details that trap debris. Read detailing rooflights in VMZINC standing seam for how we handle the back gutter behind a rooflight.

Woking’s 27 conservation areas

Woking Borough Council has 27 conservation areas. They include Hook Heath, Horsell, Mount Hermon, Old Woking and Byfleet Corner, among others, and in July 2026 the council consulted on new draft appraisals for several of them. If your house is inside one, dormers on front slopes, changes of roofing material and larger extensions are looked at more closely. Check the council’s conservation area map, or ask your architect, before you commit to a design.

Zinc is a traditional roofing metal, and pre-weathered finishes look settled from day one, so it’s usually a straightforward material to justify. We can supply samples, product data and build-ups for your application.

Building it to last

Whatever the house, the long life of a zinc roof depends on what’s underneath and on letting the metal move. We design the ventilated or warm build-up for each roof and place fixed and sliding clips so long trays can expand and contract. See movement allowance and ventilation.

Woking zinc roofing FAQs

Can a zinc dormer go on a 1930s house?

Yes. It’s one of the most common jobs we do. Dark or blue-grey pre-weathered zinc sits well against brick and render.

Do you work with loft conversion companies?

Yes. We can clad the dormer as a specialist package while your builder does the structure and interior.
