The Specialist Roofing Company is a family metal roofing business that has been fitting zinc roofs since 2007. From our base in Old Windsor we work across Greater London, installing standing seam zinc roofs, zinc dormers, mansards, cladding and guttering on houses, extensions and commercial buildings. Every roof is fitted by our own team. We never subcontract, because we believe you are only as good as your last project.

Zinc roofing services in London
- Standing seam zinc roofs on pitched, low-pitch and curved roofs, warm or cold deck. See standing seam roofing.
- Zinc dormers and loft conversions: roofs, cheeks and fronts clad in zinc, very common on London terraces.
- Mansard and rear extension roofs: zinc copes well with the low pitches and tight junctions typical of London extensions.
- Zinc cladding for walls, bays and upper storeys.
- Zinc gutters, box gutters, valleys and downpipes.
- Copper and PREFA aluminium where they suit the building better. See PREFA aluminium roofing.
We are approved installers for VMZINC, RHEINZINK and PREFA.
Why zinc suits London buildings
Zinc looks sharp on a contemporary extension and also sits comfortably next to London stock brick, slate, stucco and timber. It is light, so it rarely needs a heavier structure, and it can be folded around the awkward shapes you find on terraced and semi-detached houses: splayed bays, stepped rear additions and tight abutments against neighbouring walls. It forms its own protective patina, so it needs very little maintenance, and zinc is 100% recyclable. More than 90% of the zinc used in building is recycled.
Pre-weathered finishes from VMZINC and RHEINZINK, in blue-grey and dark grey, are popular on London extensions and dormers because they look settled from day one. We can bring samples so you and your architect can see them against your brickwork.
Planning, conservation areas and neighbours
Much of inner and west London is covered by conservation areas, and many streets have Article 4 directions that remove permitted development rights. Zinc is often accepted on rear extensions, dormers and mansards where planners want a high-quality, low-key finish, but it always depends on the borough and the building. We can give your architect or planning consultant build-ups, finishes and product information to support an application.
London jobs also bring practical challenges: party walls, narrow side returns, no front drive, scaffold and skip licences, parking suspensions and neighbours close on every side. We plan access, deliveries and working hours so the job runs safely and considerately.
Details that make a zinc roof last
Most problems with zinc roofs come from what is underneath or around the zinc, not the metal itself. On every London roof we check that:
- the zinc can expand and contract, using fixed and sliding clips and suitable bay lengths. Read why VMZINC standing seam roofs need movement allowance;
- the ventilation or warm-roof build-up is right, so the zinc isn’t corroded from the underside. Read why ventilation matters beneath VMZINC;
- rooflights, which are almost standard on London extensions, have proper kerbs and back gutters. Read detailing rooflights in VMZINC standing seam;
- zinc isn’t exposed to copper run-off or incompatible timbers and fixings from neighbouring roofs.
Areas of London we cover
We cover all of Greater London. Much of our London work is in West and South West London, which is closest to our base, including Richmond, Twickenham, Kew and the rest of the old Middlesex area. We also take on work in North, Central, East and South East London.
Guarantee and approvals
All our work comes with a 20-year guarantee. We are approved installers for VMZINC, RHEINZINK and PREFA, and we are fully insured.
