Esher is about eleven miles from our base in Old Windsor. The Specialist Roofing Company is a family-run metal roofing firm, fitting zinc since 2007, and approved installers for VMZINC, RHEINZINK and PREFA. In Esher, Claygate, Hinchley Wood, Long Ditton, Thames Ditton and Weston Green, most of what we’re asked for is extensions and loft conversions on period houses, plus the occasional complete new house.

Period houses, modern additions
The Esher area has a lot of good Victorian, Edwardian and inter-war housing: villas around the old village centre and Esher Green, Edwardian semis in Claygate and the Dittons, and 1930s houses in Hinchley Wood. Owners tend to want more space without losing the character of the house, and zinc is a natural way to do that:
- Zinc dormers. A loft dormer clad in zinc on the roof, cheeks and front is far slimmer than a tile-hung one. It looks lighter on the roof slope and gives you more headroom inside. See zinc dormers.
- Rear and side extensions. A low-pitch standing seam roof keeps the extension under the first-floor windows. Pre-weathered zinc in blue-grey or graphite sits well against London stock brick and red brick alike.
- Bays and porches. Replacing a tired lead or felt bay roof with zinc or copper is a small job we’re always happy to take on.
Conservation areas around Esher
Elmbridge Borough Council looks after several conservation areas in this corner of the borough: Esher itself, Claygate Village and the Foley Estate in Claygate, Lakeside Drive, Weston Green, Long Ditton, and Thames Ditton with Giggs Hill Green. Inside them, dormers on front slopes, changes of roofing material and larger extensions get closer scrutiny. Rear dormers and back extensions are often more straightforward.
Zinc has a good track record with planners because it’s a traditional roofing metal. With clear drawings and a sample of the chosen finish, it’s usually an easy material to justify. We can supply both. Your architect or Elmbridge’s planning team will confirm whether your project needs consent.
Green surroundings
Esher is unusually green for somewhere so close to London. Claremont Landscape Garden, Esher Common and Sandown Park all sit within a mile or so of the High Street. Mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys, and sometimes acidic run-off from oak. We keep drainage simple to clear and check what’s above and beside the zinc before we specify details. Our article on detailing rooflights covers back gutters and drainage around rooflights, which are common on Esher extensions.

Esher zinc roofing FAQs
Will a zinc dormer get planning permission in a conservation area?
It depends on the house and where the dormer goes. Rear dormers are often acceptable, and zinc is a traditional material. Your architect or Elmbridge Borough Council can advise. We’ll supply samples and product data.
How long does a zinc dormer take?
It depends on size and detailing. We’ll give you a programme with the quote, coordinated with your builder or loft company.
