Berkshire’s buildings, and why zinc fits

Berkshire has a bit of everything: Victorian terraces in Reading and Newbury, large detached homes around Ascot, Sunningdale and Wokingham, riverside houses along the Thames at Maidenhead, Bray, Cookham and Datchet, and plenty of modern extensions and new builds. Zinc suits all of them. It’s light enough for extensions and older structures, it folds neatly around awkward shapes, its natural patina means very little maintenance, and it’s fully recyclable.

We’ve worked on listed buildings, including churches, as well as contemporary standing seam, so we’re comfortable with both conservation work and modern designs. Many Berkshire towns have conservation areas, so check planning with your architect or the local council (the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Reading, Wokingham, Bracknell Forest or West Berkshire). We can supply samples and build-up details to support an application.

Riverside and wooded plots

Thames-side homes and wooded plots are common in Berkshire, and both affect a metal roof. Damp air makes the build-up underneath even more important, because zinc mustn’t trap moisture against its underside. Leaves and needles block gutters, so we design drainage that stays open and is easy to clear. See why ventilation matters under VMZINC standing seam and detailing rooflights and back gutters.

How we work on every roof

  1. Survey or drawings. Structure, pitch, falls, rooflights, junctions and drainage.
  2. Build-up. Warm or cold deck, following the manufacturer’s guidance and the designer’s condensation-risk assessment.
  3. Setting out. Seam layout planned around windows, rooflights and valleys.
  4. Fixing for movement. Fixed and sliding clips so the zinc can expand and contract. See why standing seam roofs need movement allowance.
  5. Details and handover. Ridges, eaves, abutments and gutters formed by our own team, then a tidy site and your guarantee paperwork.

Zinc roofing in Berkshire: common questions

Do you only work in Berkshire?

No. Berkshire is our home county, but we also cover Surrey, London, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire.

Can you replace a failed flat roof with zinc?

Often, yes, as long as the structure and falls suit a zinc system. We’ll check on survey.

Do you work for builders?

Yes. We regularly work as the metal roofing specialist on builders’ projects, as well as directly for homeowners.

How much does zinc roofing cost?

It depends on the area, access, build-up and finish. After a survey or a look at your drawings, we give a fixed written quote.
