Henley-on-Thames is upstream from our yard in Old Windsor, on the same river. The Specialist Roofing Company is a family-run metal roofing firm, fitting zinc roofs since 2007. We’re approved installers for VMZINC, RHEINZINK and PREFA, every roof is fitted by our own team, and all our work carries a 20-year guarantee. We work for homeowners, architects and builders in Henley, Harpsden, Remenham, Shiplake and the villages around them.

Zinc on Henley’s riverside

Henley’s riverside is unlike anywhere else on the Thames: Georgian and Victorian houses facing the water, boathouses and garden buildings running down to the bank, and the reach that hosts the Royal Regatta every summer. A lot of the metal roofing we’re asked for here is on:

  • boathouses, garden rooms and studios, where a low-pitch standing seam roof is lighter and neater than tiles and lasts far longer than felt
  • rear extensions to period houses, where pre-weathered zinc gives a modern addition a calm grey finish next to old brick and clay tile
  • new and replacement houses on larger plots, with standing seam roofs and zinc cladding

The river also brings damp air and, on the lowest ground, flood risk. Zinc must never trap moisture underneath it, so every roof gets a properly designed ventilated or warm build-up. See why ventilation matters beneath VMZINC standing seam.

Henley’s conservation area

The Henley Conservation Area takes in the historic town centre around Market Place, Hart Street and Bell Street, the riverside, and the approach over Henley Bridge, the Grade I listed stone bridge completed in 1786. South Oxfordshire District Council is the planning authority, and the boundary and appraisal were reviewed in 2022. The Joint Henley and Harpsden Neighbourhood Plan adds local policies, and the Chilterns National Landscape wraps around the town.

Across the bridge, Remenham is in Berkshire, in Wokingham Borough, so the rules can change halfway across the river. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, talk to your architect early. Zinc and copper are traditional roofing metals, so with the right drawings and samples they’re often acceptable. We supply finish samples, product data and build-ups for your application.

What we do in Henley

Trees, leaves and rooflights

Many Henley gardens are full of mature trees, and leaves collect in gutters, valleys and behind rooflights. We keep drainage routes open and easy to clear, and we set out rooflights with the seams before any material is ordered. See detailing rooflights in VMZINC standing seam.

Nearby

Downstream we cover Marlow, Maidenhead and Windsor. Upstream we cover Wallingford and Oxford. We also work across Berkshire, Surrey and London.

Can you work on a boathouse or riverside building?

Yes. We plan access, scaffolding and deliveries around the river and the site, and we design the build-up for damp riverside air.

Do you price from architects’ drawings?

Yes. Send us the drawings and specification. We’ll price the metal roofing and cladding package and flag any details we’d change.

Are you approved zinc installers?

Yes. We’re approved installers for VMZINC, RHEINZINK and PREFA, and every roof is fitted by our own team, never subcontracted.

What guarantee do you give?

All our work comes with a 20-year guarantee.
